Nantahala National Forest is North Carolina's largest national park, and the second wettest area in the country. The forest has three districts, three wilderness areas, and numerous attractions.
The Nantahala River runs through the Nantahala National Forest, starting at the Georgia and North Carolina border, and ending at Fontana Lake. The river is a great place to enjoy boating, swimming, and especially fishing. In fact, it's considered one of the country's best trout fishing locations.
Lake Nantahala, located in the Nantahala National Forest, is known for it's almost crystal-clear water and beatutiful surroundings. With around 29 miles of largely undeveloped shoreline, it's a great place ot relax and enjoy a variety of watersports.
Nantahala Gorge is one of the best whitewater rafting and kayaking locations in the country. Nantahala River runs for around eight miles throught the gorge, creating Class I, II, and III rapids. You'll also find a number of businesses offering zip line tours near the gorge.
Our area has two excellent scenic drives nearby. Cherohala Skyway is a beautifule 40-mile highway that runs between Robbinsville, NC and Tellico Plains, TN. Blue Ridge Parkway starts at Cherokee, NC, an entrance to Great Smoky Mountains National Park.
Joyce Kilmer Memorial Forest is a 3,800-acre old-growth forest, with dozens of tree species and excellent hiking trails.
Mining has been an important part of North Carolina’s legacy since the dawn of the 19th century. Tour some of these historical mines for yourself!

While we're partial to the Nantahala National Forest, the Great Smoky Mountains National Park is also a wonderful place to visit. And, it's less than an hour away. Nearby entrances include the Cherokee entrance (Oconaluftee Entrance) and the Bryson City entrance.
